The Road to Becoming

As yet untested in battle, Talymar has tried to convince himself that the life of a hearthguard was his destined life. Yet the White Hart had not come to him in some time, leaving him to doubt the path he had chosen. Fear and doubt begin to haunt him as he sees the conflict between his promise to hunt down and kill the murderers of his family and the oath of loyalty he has given to his eorl and king.

Now whispered rumors as well as belligerent threats of war have reached the ears of Mercia’s new king, Creoda. To find the truth of such threats, Talymar, in disguise, is sent on a long journey along the borderlands of Mercia. Deprived of his horse as well as his grandfather’s armor, helm, and sword, his life has been purposely put in danger by a king who lives in fear of an ancient prophesy about a Draconis Rex.

The Road to Becoming is both lonely and difficult. Those who travel it are often confronted by their greatest enemy—the monster of fear and self-doubt that lurks on the threshold of their souls.

A Warrior's Path

Now, he travels northward into the Kingdom of Mercia, where an ancient prophecy foretold the coming of ‘Rex Draconis.’ Mercian nobles both anticipate and fear the coming of such a man. One noble and his grey-eyed sorceress await him with foul intent.

For good or ill, shadowy, unseen forces are watching Talymar. Wolves, ravens, and death wait around each bend in the road north and that road has many twists and turns. But only one path will lead Talymar to the mason’s daughter and the woman with the golden-green eyes. It’s a path that will certainly destroy a meek farmer’s boy, and by themselves, Grandfather’s fine armor and a pattern-welded sword will not create a warrior. A bolder, stronger, and wiser lad—a twin his grandfather might have said—must emerge if he is to survive. Such a warrior must be forged in the heat of battle and tempered with the knowledge of when to draw his sword and when to leave it sheathed.

Choice and Destiny collide until they become indistinguishable, as Talymar must decide whether to return to the life of a farmer or become a warrior. However, not all choices are black or white. Will the White Hart lead him onto a path that encompasses both?

Destined Paths

It is the 6th century in a land that will eventually be known as England. The Angles and Saxons fight with the native population for control of the island. Peoples, religions, and cultures clash violently. But Talymar leads a life that is seemingly removed from such conflict. His home lies deep in the great Wychwood Forest where his family has been farmers, and priests of the ‘old ways’ for five generations of man. His world is one full of magic.  A deep . . . very real belief that all living things, including the land itself, are connected – and the lives of loved ones are forever entwined. A peaceful life has been laid out before the boy – to follow in his father’s steps and marry Brighid. But the Wyrd Sisters, the weavers of the fate of men, care not for their hopes and dreams. For a man’s life should be as they have woven it – not as he has chosen it to be.  Wolves prowl in the shadows of Talymar’s life, the family has secrets, and an ancient prophecy has already set Talymar’s path before him. Will the White Hart lead him to that which the boy has chosen or on destined paths?
